Reading with Rover
Reading with Rover is a community-based literacy program volunteering in the schools, bookstores and libraries of Puget Sound area of Washington State. It is their goal, as volunteers and founders of Reading with Rover, to make the "Rover" program available to all schools, reading and learning facilities that would like to enhance their reading programs. Reading with Rover helps children with special needs build confidence not only in reading but in themselves as well. Dogs make wonderful, non judgmental listeners and children are not threatened or uncomfortable when interacting and reading to a dog, especially a Reading with Rover dog! “Reading with Rover was introduced to me by one of our clients – and I am grateful for the introduction, it was something we absolutely wanted to be involved with. We were so impressed by the program and thankful for the opportunity to help support their efforts. My wife is a second grade teacher and I hear about the struggles that some children have with reading and the classroom setting. This program is something that really makes a difference and it is such a fantastic idea. The stories you hear of the improvements these children make when given the opportunity to work with the Reading with Rover program are amazing. To hear the stories of how even the children who are not struggling long to work with the dogs is truly heartwarming.”
